Lindsay PW B Lynx Drop Bronze Medal Game 2-1
The Lindsay PW B Lynx played this past weekend in the Lower Lakes Championship Tournament and advanced to the Bronze medal game where they lost a hard fought battle against the Bluewater Hawks 2-1.

The tournament was evenly matched with the 5 Playoff Champions squaring off for the medals. The Bluewater Hawks, Vaughan Flames, Haldimand Rivercats, Woolwich Wild and Lindsay Lynx all should be proud of themselves for reaching the Championship Weekend. The Lynx want to congratulate Woolwich (Gold), Haldimand (Silver) and Bluewater (Bronze) on their medal wins. The team also wants to congratulate the Lindsay Lynx Bantam B on their Gold Medal win and the Lindsay Lynx Peewee C on their Bronze Medal win. Great job girls!!

Game results below:
Game 1 - Lindsay 3 Vaughan 2
The Lynx got off to a slow start in this game and didn't seem to have their legs early. This proved costly as 5 minutes into the game the Flames took a 1-0 lead on a shot from the point that changed direction on the way past goalie Emma Francois. The Lynx started to find their game in the 2nd period and Laura Brown made a strong move at the Flames blueline, after receiving a nice pass from Emma Shanks, and drove the net where she got the equalizer on a hard, low shot on the blocker side (assists to Shanks and Hannah Vallier). The Lynx would take their 1st lead of the game in the 1st minute of the 3rd period as Kayla Golden made a nice move out from the corner to fire a shot past the Flames' goalie (lone assist went to Julia Sudsbury). The lead didn't last however as midway through the period a Vaughan player went in on a 1 on 1 and was able to fire a shot just over goalie Emma's blocker to tie the score at 2-2. Just when it looked like the game was going to end in a tie a nice forecheck from the line of Gracie Cunday, Kayla Golden and Mya Mattiussi caused a scoring chance with 45 seconds left and Mattiussi was able to bang home the winner with assists going to Cunday and Golden and the Lynx held on for the 3-2 win.

Game 2 - Bluewater 1 Lindsay 0
The Lynx knew they were in tough against the strong Hawks team and once again the Lynx didn't appear to have their legs under them for the start of the game. The Lynx fell behind early as the Hawks went up the ice on a 3 on 2 rush and a nice pass out from the corner to the trailer allowed Bluewater to take a 1-0 lead as the Hawks player one-timed the pass past goalie Emma. The Lynx would slowly gain some momentum but both teams did a great job of limiting any real scoring chances throughout the rest of the game. The best chance for the Lynx to tie the game came in the last minute with the goalie pulled. A scramble in front saw the puck squirt lose to Kayla Golden who fired a shot which the Hawks goalie would make a nice save on and the rebound went out to Mya Mattiussi who couldn't get the shot up and over the sprawled out Hawks goalie as the game ended 1-0. Emma Lees played a great and aggressive game from her defensive spot in this game.

Game 3 - Haldimand 7 Lindsay 3
This proved to be the wildest game of the tournament for the Lynx as it had back and forth swings and the game was closer than the score would indicate due to the last 2 Rivercats goals being empty-netters. Again the Lynx came out sluggish (the girls really don't seem to like early morning games) and the Rivercats took advantage and pounded the Lynx with relentless pressure during the 1st period which would end with the Lynx trailing 3-0. The coaching staff was proud of how the girls reacted to this as the 2nd period was one of the better periods they have played all year. The Lynx were able to get their forecheck going for the 1st time all tournament and all 3 lines (Maddy Donnelly/Taylor Allen/Nixon Francis, Kayla Golden/Gracie Cunday/Mya Mattiussi and Julia Staniland/Taryn Lindquist/Laura Brown) were all involved. This resulted in a great cycle play by Cunday and Golden with Kayla making a great pass to Mattiussi in the slot who fired a shot to the top corner to get the Lynx on the board (assists to Golden and Cunday). Just a few minutes later the line of Staniland, Lindquist and Brown had their own dominant shift which resulted in Lindquist banging home a rebound over the Rivercats goalie to cut the deficit to 3-2 (assists to Brown and Staniland). The Rivercats would bounce back in the last minute of the period to restore their 2 goal lead on a goalmouth scramble, however the Lynx were not done yet with their own scoring in the period and a good dump in by Emma Shanks led to a good forecheck and pass out by Staniland where Laura Brown was able to one-time home the goal and again cut the deficit to 1 (assists to Staniland and Shanks). The Lynx kept up the pressure in the 3rd period as a wrap around try by Maddy Donnelly was turned away, a shot from the high slot by Taylor Allen was blocked, Mya Mattiussi banged a rebound just wide of an open net and a point shot from Julia Sudsbury, which looked to be going in, was blocked at the last minute by a Rivercats defender. The Lynx would take a penalty midway through the period and the Rivercats took advantage and restored their 2 goal lead, 5-3. The Lynx had 1 final chance as they were awarded a 5 on 3 powerplay with 3 minutes to go. The Lynx pulled the goalie for a 6 on 3 opportunity for the full 3 minutes and saw Kayla Golden and Hannah Vallier have excellent chances only to be turned away. The Rivercats ultimately would get 2 empty netters to finish the game with a 7-3 win but the Lynx coaching staff was very proud of how the girls battled and never gave up.

Game 4 - Lindsay 1 Woolwich 0
Lindsay would have to beat the previously undefeated Wild in order to be guaranteed a chance to advance to the Bronze medal game and the Lynx came out flying. In another one of their best periods in a while the Lynx kept the pressure in the Wild zone for much of the period but couldn't find the net as the Wild did a good job of limiting any really good scoring chances and the period ended 0-0. The 2nd period was more tightly contested and again both teams limited the scoring chances for the other. Then Kayla Golden went on a rush up the right side of the ice and used a power move to the net where she was able to put home a backhand shot and score the eventual game winner (assists to Julia Sudsbury and Emma Lees). The 3rd period was another tight period with both teams playing good defense. Emma Francois made some key saves to preserve her shutout and the 1-0 win which put the Lynx in the Bronze Medal game against Bluewater.

Bronze Medal Game - Bluewater 2 Lindsay 1
The Lynx would score first and take a 1-0 lead half-way through the 1st period as Nixon Francis won a battle in front and put a nice backhand past the Hawks goalie. The result of a good forecheck by Taylor Allen and Maddy Donnelly and a pass from the point by Emma Lees (assists went to Donnelly and Lees). The Lynx almost went up 2-0 as Mya Mattiussi one-timed a pass from the corner from Kayla Golden which just went wide of the net. Mattiussi had another chance later in the period as her and Golden and Gracie Cunday went in on a 3 on 1 and Mattiussi again took a shot that just went wide. Late in the 1st the Hawks would tie the score on an offensive zone faceoff win which their point player blasted home with a slapshot to the top corner and the 1st period ended 1-1. The 2nd period was very equal and again not many scoring chances for either team took place. But with a few minutes left in the period a Rivercats player made a nice move to get in alone on goalie Emma and fire a shot past her blocker as a scrambling Julia Sudsbury made a valiant attempt to get back and crashed into the net. The Lynx would pressure hard in the 3rd period for the equalizer and a good rush from Emma Lees saw a shot go just wide. Then both Taryn Lindquist and Laura Brown made good rushes only to have the last Hawks defender not the puck away in the slot area. A powerplay for the Lynx with 5 minutes to go saw Julia Staniland win a faceoff back to Hannah Vallier who made a nice pass to partner Emma Shanks whose shot was blocked at the last minute by a Hawks player. After killing their own late penalty Maddy Donnelly made one final rush up the ice in the last 15 seconds and took a good backhand shot which the Hawks goalie was able to stop and Nixon Francis just couldn't get to the rebound. Emma Francois made several good saves throughout the game and the Lynx fell just short of the Bronze in losing 2-1. Many of the girls stepped up in this game and battled through injuries and illness which was very positive.

Again the coaches were very proud of how hard the girls battled against some very talented teams. We hope that they use this as we travel to the All Ontario Provincial Championships this coming weekend in their strive for a Medal. It won't be easy, but if the girls can put together 3 full periods of hockey in each game the coaching staff is confident that we can compete. Go LYNX GO!!!
