MIDGET BB TEAM CAPTURES SILVER - PLAYING LIKE GOLD
The Lindsay Lynx Midget BB team competed at the “Waterloo Ravens Challenge Cup” Tournament this
past weekend (Nov 6-8). What a weekend!
The team headed to this tournament without having logged much game time, but having logged a lot of
practice time. When the competition began, it was clear we were not yet “game hardened”. At the
conclusion of Round Robin play we found ourselves in 5th place.
The other teams in the tournament felt they saw a weak opponent. However, our team’s coaching staff saw something different during round robin play. We saw the efforts made to take what we had worked on, and bring it up to game speed. We saw our goalies find a renewed focus. (We quietly noticed that we were the only team to not give up on what would become the number one seeded home team at the end of round robin play by scoring the only goal on them in round robin play, in the third period.)
This was the “tipping point for our team”. Entering the playoff round we were underestimated, but - unbeknownst to the competition - we had just become “a team".
The first surprise dealt by our girls was in the victory they earned in the quarter final elimination game late Saturday night against the number two seeded team. We showed up early the next morning to surprise the number three seeded team in a decisive victory in the semi final elimination game. We were off to the final, our sixth game in three days, just three hours later.
The girls faced a rematch against a the well rested home team, that had their round robin games spread over 3 days, and being the first place seed, only having to play one elimination game. It was a great game, but we just didn’t have enough gas left in the tank. A gritty and determined 1-0 loss.
The coaching staff’s goal for the tournament was for the girls to become a team, and get a taste of what they can achieve when they play hard, for each other. It took a while for this to come together girls. Great job and keep it going!!!
