2018 Alumni Game
Letter from 2018 Alumni Chair
When I was asked to chair the 20 Year Alumni Committee, my initial thought was “how hard can it be to organize a 50 min exhibition game?”. Like many parents of a graduated player I was in hockey withdrawal so I gladly accepted. After a 10-minute brainstorming session I realized there was a lot of work to do. I cannot thank our sponsors, the members of the Alumni Committee, and Executive enough. Our Committee reached out to our founders, secured sponsors, completed registration, designed new jerseys and socks, designed a new banner for the LRC, booked a professional photographer, selected bench staff, drafted teams, held a puck drop ceremony, and hosted a fantastic after party at Boston Pizza.
The final score is not important but being with the families of players that were born from the 1980’s 90’s and 2000’s was a blast. It was an honour to meet and chat with our founding members Tammy Patrick, Deb Trestik and Cy Allen. I have seen our Association grow over the past 10 years but for the families of players who graduated in the early 2000’s it must have been amazing to see the current Lynx Day; an event celebrating female hockey in our community that now includes 12 Lynx teams. Each player has their own highlights but many mentioned how great it was to be back in a dressing room again, to act like a kid again.
When the horn sounded my first thought was “I’m glad no one got hurt” followed by “maybe they’ll want do this again for 25 years”. Talking to the players post game the majority want to make this a yearly event. I said “That’s awesome. Make sure you book the ice early with the Exec and don’t call me!”. But the truth is I’d do it again in a heart beat.
Yours in Hockey,
