Lindsay Lynx Peewee B Win Silver in Smiths Falls Cubtown Tournament
The Lindsay Lynx Peewee B team traveled to Smiths Falls this past weekend and came away with the Silver Medal. It was a great tournament, with excellent games played by the girls on the ice and great fun had by all off the ice. The team would like to thank the parents for their support and Heidi and Shannon for organizing all the fun off-ice events; Minute-to-Win-It, Pie in the Face, Bowling, Charades, etc. And Coach Vern for his donut eating display. Complete game wrap-ups below.

Game 1 - Lindsay 1 - Smiths Falls 1
In a game featuring two of the top teams in the Province the Lynx showed they were up to the challenge. The game was evenly contested throughout the first period and saw good chances by both teams but both Emma Francois for the Lynx and the Smiths Falls goalie were able to keep the game tied at 0-0 with some great saves. Late in the 2nd period the Lynx went on the Powerplay and Julia Sudsbury went on an end to end rush and made a great move on the SF goalie only to see her make a great leg save on a backhand deke. Fortunately the rebound was there for Gracie Cunday to drive the net for and on her 2nd attempt she was able to pop it in for a 1-0 Lynx lead to end the 2nd period. Assists went to Sudsbury and Nixon Francis. The lead was short-lived however as early in the 3rd the Cubs tied the game on a sharp angle shot which goalie Emma stopped with a good glove hand but the puck trickled out and over the line. The 3rd period stayed even and both teams played hard and each deserved the final 1-1 outcome. Julia Sudsbury was voted player of the game.

Game 2 -  Lindsay 3 - Ottawa 1
The Lynx dominated this game from the outset but the Ice goalie played a great game in keeping this one close. Early in the 1st Taryn Lindquist got the Lynx on the board with a shot to the top corner from the highslot. Assists went to Julia Staniland and Hannah Vallier. Just 1 minute later the Lynx made it 2-0 as Mya Mattiussi scored the eventual game winner on a goalmouth scramble with assists going to Vallier and Kayla Golden. Late in the 2nd the Lynx went up 3-0 as Maddy Donnelly banged home a great pass from the corner from Taylor Allen with the other assist going to Emma Shanks. The Ice would cut into the lead and make it 3-1 but could not get any closer than that. Gracie Cunday was awarded player of the game.

Game 3 - Lindsay 6 - Ottawa 1
The Lynx came out flat in this game and took a penalty early and gave up the 1st goal on the Powerplay to fall behind 1-0 just 3 minutes into this game. This seemed to wake up the Lynx and they came roaring back to score 2 in 25 seconds late in the 1st to take the lead. Laura Brown scored the 1st on a great low, hard shot from the wing. Assists went to Maddy Donnelly and Taryn Lindquist. Then Gracie Cunday scored the winner on a nice walk out backhand from behind the net. Assists went to Mya Mattiussi and Hannah Vallier. The Lynx kept the pressure on and scored twice more in the 2nd. Laura Brown got her 2nd of the game on a wrap-around with assists going to Julia Sudsbury and Julia Staniland. Then Gracie Cunday got her 2nd of the game on another goalmouth scramble with Kayla Golden and Emma Shanks getting the assists. The 3rd period saw another 2 goals with Emma Shanks scoring on a shot from the point (assists to Golden and Cunday) and then Kayla Golden scored on a great rush up the ice with assists going to Emma Lees and Julia Sudsbury. This win guaranteed the Lynx a spot in the Gold Medal Game. Player of the Game was Laura Brown.

Game 4 - Lindsay 0 - Smiths Falls 1
In what was just a warm-up to the Gold Medal Game the Lynx played their best game of the tournament but got stonewalled by great goaltending. The Lynx took it to Smiths Falls all game and would outshot the Cubs 25-8 in the game. But with 7 minutes to go the Cubs got a point shot off which was deflected high into the air and over goalie Emma's head for the lone goal of the game. Emma Shanks rattled a shot off the Cubs goalie's mask with just under 4 minutes to play but the Lynx could not get one past her. Julia Staniland and Nixon Francis both had great games and Emma Francois made some key saves when called upon but the Lynx came up just short. Julia Staniland was voted Player of the Game.

Gold Medal Game - Lindsay 0 - Smiths Falls 3
The # 1 and 2 ranked teams in the Province battling for Gold is what every tournament hopes for. And this is what took place in this game. Both teams had great scoring chances early with Emma Francois shutting the door first and then the Cubs goalie denying Nixon Francis and Taylor Allen on the same shift. The 1st period ended tied 0-0 with the Lynx outshooting the Cubs 8-2. The 2nd period was more of the same and saw Mya Mattiussi and Kayla Golden stoned by the Cubs goalie. The 2nd period ended still tied 0-0 and saw the Lynx outshoot the Cubs 8-4. The Cubs went up 1-0 early in the 3rd on a goalmouth scramble with the puck just sliding past goalie Emma on the short-side post. The Lynx then went on the Powerplay and saw excellent chances from Julia Sudsbury on an end to end rush and from Maddy Donnelly on a hard low shot from the left circle. But the Cubs goalie had the Lynx's number and kept the puck out. The Cubs went up 2-0 on a semi-breakaway and a great hard shot that just got past Emma Francois' glove hand. The Lynx would pull their goalie and apply heavy pressure late but still couldn't beat the Cubs goalie and would eventually give up the empty-netter and fall 3-0. Shots in the 3rd were 6-5 Lynx and for the game ended 22-11. Player of the Game was Hannah Vallier.

The Lynx had a great weekend winning the Silver Medal and the girls should be proud. Hopefully we will get to
face the Smiths Falls team in the OWHA's on April 7-10 as they are a great team and test for the Lynx. The Lynx will now focus on Round 2 of the LL Playoffs and will face the winner of Napanee and Toronto Leaside (3754).
Go LYNX Go!!!
